I got to The Mynabirds thanks to the impeccable taste of Dan Hacker.
This Omaha band, started when Laura Burhenn found herself band-less and strayed. She’s joined live in the flesh by Johnny Kotchian (drums), Dan McCarthy (bass and vocals), Pearl Lovejoy Boyd (vocals), Ben Brodin (guitars and vocals) and Alex McManus (guitars, horns, and vocals) is a small epic little gem.
LA Rain, our featured track today, is an outstanding example of how a voice as powerful and evocative as Burnhenn’s (which at times surprises me somewhere between Zooey Deschanel and Cat Power) fits into good lyrical composition and orchestral arrangements.
Most definitively a new favorite.
“What We Lose In The Fire We Gained In The Flood”, their debut album, comes out on April 27 on Saddle Creek.
